Maryland Rules & Regulations

Maryland law states that:
Anyone born on or after July 1, 1972 must have in their possession a Certificate of Boating Safety Education while operating a vessel required to be "numbered" or "documented" on Maryland waters.  If a Certificate of Boating Safety Education cannot be produced on request by a law enforcement officer, a minimum fine of $25 for first offense and up to $500 for each additional offense can be imposed.

Children under 4 years of age must wear a Lifejacket with additional safety features:

1) STRAP that is secured between the legs to fasten together the front & back of the Lifejacket

2) INFLATABLE HEADREST or HIGH COLLAR to keep child's head above water

3) WEB HANDLE to ensure readily accessibility of the child from a vessel or dock

Children under 13 must wear a a U.S. Coast Guard approved lifejacket while underway on a recreational vessel under 21 ft

Anyone under 16 must have a Certificate of Boating Safety Education to operate a vessel equipped with primary or secondary mechanical / electrical propulsion, unless supervised by someone 18 or older who has a Boating Safety Education Certificate or an adult born prior to July 1, 1972
